VACCINE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD














 he Bri sh Rulers of India were concerned about tropical diseases like plague, leprosy, cholera and malaria. Series of

 bacteriological laboratories and Pasteur Ins tutes were set-up across India. The first Pasteur Ins tute was established

 Tin Kasauli in 1900 and subsequently in Coonoor (1907) and Shillong (1915). The Pasteur Ins tute, Coonoor began
 opera ons on April 6, 1907 and on April 25, 1907, Sir Arthur Lawley, Governor of Madras, officially opened the ins tute.



 By 1930, there were 15 vaccine institutes in India.


 India had four vaccina ons for cholera, smallpox, plague, and typhoid in the early twen eth century. Pasteur Ins tute of India,
